What the Aries symbol means
Two curves rising from a single stem. Read them as the horns of the ram, seen head-on, and the glyph makes sense at once: a face that meets things forehead first. Some readers see the brow and nose of a face instead. Either way it is the same idea. Whatever is coming, this is the part that gets there first.
The myth behind Aries: the ram
The ram had a fleece of gold. Sent by the cloud nymph Nephele, it carried her children Phrixus and Helle away from a stepmother who wanted them dead. Helle slipped and fell into the strait that still carries her name, the Hellespont. Phrixus made it to Colchis, sacrificed the ram in thanks, and hung the fleece in a sacred grove, where it waited for Jason and the Argonauts. Zeus set the ram in the sky. It opens the zodiac because spring opens here: when the system was drawn, the Sun entered Aries at the equinox.

Aries is a small constellation and an honest one: three stars in a short, bent line. Hamal is the brightest, an orange giant whose name is Arabic for lamb. Sheratan and Mesarthim mark the horns. It sits between the Pleiades and the Great Square of Pegasus, high in the December evening sky. Two thousand years ago the Sun stood here at the spring equinox, which is why Aries still comes first; the slow wobble of the Earth has since moved that point into Pisces, but the sign kept the name.
How Aries reads
Aries leads with the body before the plan is finished. They would rather be wrong quickly than right slowly, and most of the time the speed carries them through. Anger arrives fast and leaves faster; they are baffled when someone is still upset an hour later. Underneath is a plain kind of honesty: what you see is the whole thing. The tell is that they are halfway out the door while you are still deciding.

What the Taurus symbol means
A circle with a crescent resting on top: the head of the bull and its horns. It is one of the most literal glyphs in the set, and it has been drawn this way since the Babylonians, for whom the Bull of Heaven was already ancient. Astrologers also read the crescent as the Moon, which is said to be at its best in Taurus. Both readings agree on the point: something solid, with a curve of softness on top.
The myth behind Taurus: the bull
Zeus wanted Europa, so he appeared on the beach as a white bull so gentle that she climbed onto its back. It walked into the sea and swam to Crete, and she never went home. Their son Minos built the labyrinth. Only the bull's front half is in the sky, which storytellers explained by saying the rest was underwater. The Bull of Heaven appears earlier still, in the epic of Gilgamesh, sent down by the goddess Ishtar. This is one of the oldest constellations anyone has named.

Look for Aldebaran, the bull's eye: an orange-red giant that sits in a V of stars, the Hyades, forming the face. Above the shoulder sit the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters, the most famous star cluster in the sky. Two long horns reach toward Gemini. It is one of the easiest constellations to find on a January evening. Follow the line of Orion's belt up and to the right and it lands on Aldebaran.
How Taurus reads
Taurus decides slowly and then does not revisit it. They like the physical world: good fabric, a real meal, a chair that is theirs. People mistake the calm for passivity until they push and find that nothing gives. They are loyal past the point of sense, and generous in ways that involve effort rather than words. The tell is that they have had the same favorite thing for fifteen years and do not see why that is remarkable.

What the Gemini symbol means
Two upright strokes, joined at the top and the bottom: the twins standing side by side, or the Roman numeral for two. It is the only glyph in the zodiac that is plainly a pair. The crossbars are the part to notice. They are the link between two people who could not be separated, even by death, which is the whole point of the story.
The myth behind Gemini: the twins
Castor and Pollux were twins with different fathers: Castor mortal, the son of a king; Pollux immortal, the son of Zeus. They sailed with the Argonauts and were never apart. When Castor was killed, Pollux asked Zeus to let him die too, or to share what he had. Zeus split it: half their days in the underworld, half on Olympus, together. Then he set them in the sky as a pair, where sailors took the sight of them as a good omen.

Two bright stars close together mark the twins' heads: Castor and Pollux. Pollux is the brighter and slightly orange; Castor, blue-white, is actually six stars bound together. From them two lines of fainter stars run down to the feet, near Orion's raised arm. Best on a February evening, high overhead. The Geminid meteors in mid-December appear to stream out of this constellation.
How Gemini reads
Gemini is two conversations at once and keeps up with both. They collect people, facts and half-finished projects, and they are more loyal than their reputation suggests; they just get bored of saying so. They think out loud, so the first thing they say is not necessarily the thing they mean. The tell is that they have already changed the subject, and somehow it is more interesting than the one you were on.

What the Cancer symbol means
Two curled shapes turned toward each other. The usual reading is the crab's claws; older ones see the pincers folded in, or a pair of breasts, since Cancer is the sign of nurture and the Moon. Either way it is an image of holding on. It is also, if you look, a figure turning back on itself, which is what Cancer does with anything it feels.
The myth behind Cancer: the crab
While Heracles fought the Hydra, Hera, who hated him, sent a crab to distract him. It nipped his heel. He crushed it without looking down. For its loyalty Hera set the crab among the stars, which is why it is the faintest constellation in the zodiac: a small creature honored for trying. The Tropic of Cancer takes its name from here. When the tropics were named, the midsummer Sun stood in this sign.

Cancer has no bright stars, and that is fine. What it has is the Beehive, a cluster of a few hundred stars that looks like a soft smudge to the naked eye and a swarm through binoculars; the Greeks called it the Manger. Find it between Gemini and Leo on a March evening, under a dark sky. The brightest star, Tarf, marks a leg. It is the constellation you have to want to see.
How Cancer reads
Cancer notices the mood of a room before anyone has spoken. They remember everything: the date, the offhand comment, who was kind. The shell is real. They retreat to work out what they feel, then come back all the way. Home is not a place so much as a set of people, and they will defend it with more steel than anyone expects. The tell is that they will say they are fine and then quietly fix whatever was wrong for you.

What the Leo symbol means
A loop with a tail that sweeps out and up: the lion's mane and its tail, or the whole animal in profile if you squint. It is one of the few glyphs with a flourish, and that is the sign in a single line, the extra curve it did not strictly need. Some trace it to the Sickle, the curve of stars that draws the lion's head in the sky.
The myth behind Leo: the lion
The Nemean lion could not be cut. Arrows bounced off it; swords bent. Heracles' first labor was to kill it, and when weapons failed he wrestled it and strangled it, then used its own claws to skin it and wore the pelt for the rest of his life. Zeus put the lion in the sky. In Egypt the Nile rose while the Sun was in Leo, which is the usual explanation for why fountains pour water from a lion's mouth.

Leo actually looks like a lion, which is rarer than you would think. A backwards question mark of stars, the Sickle, draws the head and mane; a triangle behind it makes the hindquarters and tail. Regulus, the little king, sits at the base of the Sickle, at the lion's heart, almost exactly on the Sun's path. Best in April, high in the south. The Leonid meteors radiate out of the mane each November.
How Leo reads
Leo runs warm. They are generous with attention and expect it back, and they are honest enough to admit that. The confidence is real, but it is not indifference; a Leo knows exactly who clapped. They protect their people loudly. Ask them to make themselves smaller and watch what happens. The tell is that the room reorganizes around them and they did not do anything on purpose.

What the Virgo symbol means
An M whose last stroke turns back and closes on itself. The M is shared with Scorpio; the difference is what the tail does. Virgo's folds inward, the traditional mark of the maiden, self-contained. One old theory reads the whole glyph as a compressed spelling of the Greek word parthenos, virgin, which was the constellation's Greek name.
The myth behind Virgo: the maiden
The maiden is usually Astraea, goddess of justice, who lived among humans in the golden age and was the last of the gods to leave when the world turned cruel. She rose to the sky, and the scales she carried became Libra beside her. Other tellings make her Demeter, or Persephone, or the Babylonian grain goddess. In every version she holds an ear of wheat, which is what Spica, her brightest star, means.

Virgo is the second-largest constellation in the sky and mostly faint: a long Y of stars lying along the Sun's path. One star does the work. Spica, the ear of grain in the maiden's hand, is blue-white and bright. Follow the arc of the Big Dipper's handle to Arcturus, then keep going, and you land on it. Best on a May evening. The Virgo Cluster behind it holds more than a thousand galaxies.
How Virgo reads
Virgo sees the detail everyone else walked past and cannot unsee it. That is a gift when it is aimed at a project and a burden when it is aimed inward. They show love by making things work: the fixed thing, the remembered preference, the list you did not ask for. They are funnier than they get credit for, dry and quick. The tell is that they have already noticed the thing, and they are deciding whether to mention it.

What the Libra symbol means
A line with a curve rising above it: the beam of a balance, or the Sun setting on the horizon. Both readings are old. Libra begins at the autumn equinox, the day when light and dark weigh the same, so the glyph is either a scale or the exact moment of balance drawn as a picture of the sky.
The myth behind Libra: the scales
Libra is the only sign that is not a living thing. It is the scales of justice, held by Astraea, who stands beside it as Virgo. For a long time it was not a separate constellation at all: its two brightest stars were the claws of the scorpion, and their Arabic names still say so. Zubenelgenubi is the southern claw and Zubeneschamali the northern one. The Romans cut the claws loose and made them a balance, and claimed the Moon stood here on the day Rome was founded.
The Libra constellation

A faint kite of four stars between Virgo and Scorpius, best on a June evening low in the south. Zubeneschamali is the brighter of the two claws and has a long-standing reputation for looking faintly green, which no other naked-eye star is supposed to do. Zubenelgenubi is a wide double that splits in binoculars. Nothing here is bright. It is a constellation for people who like knowing what they are looking at.
How Libra reads
Libra sees both sides so clearly that choosing feels like a betrayal of one of them. They are drawn to beauty and to fairness and get genuinely upset when either is missing. The charm is real, and so is the spine underneath it; they will keep the peace right up until something matters, and then they will not. What the Scorpio symbol means
An M with a barbed tail: the scorpion, with the sting turned up and outward. It shares the M with Virgo, and the two glyphs are a lesson in the difference between a tail that folds in and one that strikes. Some readers see the three strokes as legs. The arrow is never in doubt.
The myth behind Scorpio: the scorpion
Orion the hunter boasted that he could kill every animal on Earth. The Earth answered with a scorpion. It stung him, and both were set among the stars, deliberately at opposite ends. As Scorpius rises in the east, Orion sinks below the western horizon; they never share the sky. It is the oldest grudge in astronomy and you can watch it play out every night.

Scorpius is one of the few constellations that looks exactly like its name: a curved line of stars with a hook at the end for the stinger. Antares sits at the heart, a red supergiant so large that, put in place of the Sun, it would swallow the orbit of Mars. Its name means rival of Mars, for the color. Best on a July evening, low in the south from the US and nearly overhead from Australia. The tail dips into the thickest part of the Milky Way.
How Scorpio reads
Scorpio decides whether to trust you before you have noticed you are being read. They give nothing away by accident and everything on purpose, which is why the loyalty, once it arrives, is total. They do not do halfway: not in work, not in love, not in grudges. Under the control is more feeling than almost anyone else in the zodiac. The myth behind Sagittarius: the archer
The archer is a centaur, half horse and half man, with the bow drawn. Most Greek writers named him Crotus, the son of Pan, who invented archery and lived among the Muses; they asked Zeus to put him in the sky. Later tellings give the constellation to Chiron, the wise centaur who taught Achilles, though Chiron usually gets Centaurus instead. In either version the arrow is aimed at the heart of the scorpion beside him.

Forget the centaur and look for the Teapot. Eight stars make a spout, a lid and a handle, and it is one of the clearest shapes in the summer sky. The steam rising from the spout is the Milky Way itself: Sagittarius points at the center of our galaxy, the densest and brightest stretch of it. Kaus Australis, at the bottom of the bow, is the brightest star. Best in August, low in the south from the US.
How Sagittarius reads
Sagittarius says the true thing before the polite thing. They would rather be somewhere they have never been, and if they cannot be, they will be reading about it. Restlessness is the engine and optimism is the fuel. They forgive quickly, because holding a grudge takes them off the road. What the Capricorn symbol means
The strangest glyph in the set, because it is the strangest creature: a goat's head and horns at the front, a fish's tail curling behind. Read the sharp V as the horns and the loop as the tail. It is an animal that climbs and swims, built for the mountain and the deep at once, which is exactly Capricorn.
The myth behind Capricorn: the sea-goat
When the monster Typhon attacked the gods, Pan dived into the Nile to escape. The half above the water stayed goat; the half beneath turned to fish. Zeus liked the look of it and set the goat-fish in the sky. But the creature is far older than Pan. The Babylonians drew the goat-fish thousands of years earlier as the animal of Ea, god of wisdom and deep water. It is one of the oldest images people have kept.
The Capricorn constellation

A faint, wide triangle low in the south on a September evening, with nothing bright to anchor it. Deneb Algedi, the tail of the goat, is the brightest, and it is not very. Algedi, at the head, is a naked-eye double: two stars that only look like neighbors. The Tropic of Capricorn is named for it; the midwinter Sun stood here when the tropics were named. A constellation for patient people, which is fitting.
How Capricorn reads
Capricorn plays a long game and does not announce it. They will do the boring, necessary thing for years and then, apparently overnight, arrive. The dryness is humor; the reserve is standards. They take responsibility for people who did not ask them to, and take it seriously. Underneath is a goat that also swims: more feeling and more strangeness than the surface admits. What the Aquarius symbol means
Two parallel waves: water pouring from the bearer's jar. It confuses people because Aquarius is an air sign, but the water was never the point. The pouring is. Some read the lines as electricity or airwaves, which suits the modern sign. The oldest reading is simpler: a life-giving flood, sent down for everyone.
The myth behind Aquarius: the water bearer
Ganymede, a prince of Troy, was so beautiful that Zeus sent an eagle to carry him to Olympus, where he became cupbearer to the gods and poured for them at every feast. The eagle is Aquila, close by in the sky. An older story makes the bearer Deucalion, who survived the great flood, and the Babylonians saw the god Ea pouring the Tigris and the Euphrates out of a vase. Every version is about giving water away.

The Helix Nebula, the shell of a dying star and the closest one of its kind to Earth, sits here.
How Aquarius reads
Aquarius stands slightly outside the room, watching it, and likes it there. They are warm at a distance and awkward up close, loyal to ideas and to a small number of people who understand that. Contrarian on principle; original by nature. They will fight harder for a stranger's cause than for their own comfort. Two curves facing away from each other, with a bar across the middle: two fish swimming in opposite directions, tied together by a cord. The cord is the glyph. It is the only symbol in the zodiac about being pulled two ways and staying connected anyway, which is Pisces to the letter.
The myth behind Pisces: the fishes
When Typhon came for the gods, Aphrodite and her son Eros leapt into the Euphrates and became fish, or were carried off by two of them, and tied themselves together with a cord so that neither could be lost. The knot in that cord is a real star, Alrescha, where the two ribbons of the constellation meet. Ancient writers said the Syrians would not eat fish because of the story. The Babylonians had drawn the tied fishes centuries before.

The Sun now crosses the equator here at the spring equinox, which is why astronomers say the first point of Aries sits in Pisces.
How Pisces reads
Pisces absorbs the room, which is why they need to leave it sometimes. They feel other people's weather as their own, and they will drop everything for someone who is drowning. The imagination is enormous and slightly ungoverned; deadlines are a foreign concept. They see the best in people until it is proven otherwise, and then they see it anyway. The constellation itself: the arrangement that was overhead, behind the daylight, on the day you were born. The quietest of the three. Only people who know will place it.
Astra ConstellationFour elements, three modes, twelve signs
Every sign is one element crossed with one mode, and no two signs share both. The element is what a sign is made of. The mode is where it falls in its season, and what it does with it.
Fire starts things and burns through the middle. Quick to warm, quick to move on.
Earth makes things that last, and judges by what can be touched.
Air lives in ideas and conversation, and needs room to move.
Water reads the room, remembers it, and runs deeper than it shows.
You can't see your own constellation on your birthday
Your sign is the stretch of sky the Sun was standing in front of when you were born. That is exactly why you cannot see it that night: it is up during the day, behind the daylight, and sets with the Sun. Your constellation comes into the evening sky about half a year later. This is when to look.
Months are for evening skies in the Northern Hemisphere, looking south. From Australia the same months hold, but look north instead, and the summer constellations, Scorpius and Sagittarius, pass almost directly overhead.
The questions people actually ask
What zodiac sign am I?
Your sign is set by where the Sun was on the day you were born. Aries is March 21 to April 19, Taurus April 20 to May 20, Gemini May 21 to June 20, Cancer June 21 to July 22, Leo July 23 to August 22, Virgo August 23 to September 22, Libra September 23 to October 22, Scorpio October 23 to November 21, Sagittarius November 22 to December 21, Capricorn December 22 to January 19, Aquarius January 20 to February 18, and Pisces February 19 to March 20. The birthday finder at the top of this page does the lookup for you and flags the days where it depends on the year.
I was born on a cusp. Which sign am I?
One of them, not both. The Sun is in exactly one sign at the moment you are born; a cusp just means you were born close to the day it crosses over. That day moves by up to a day from year to year, so if your birthday is within a day or two of a boundary, your birth year and time settle it. Any free birth chart calculator will tell you in seconds. Plenty of people born on the line relate to both signs anyway, and there is no rule against wearing both.
Is there a 13th zodiac sign?
No. The Sun does pass in front of the constellation Ophiuchus every December, which is where the story comes from. But the signs of Western astrology are not constellations. They are twelve equal slices of the Sun's yearly path, fixed to the seasons and named after the constellations that sat behind them when the system was drawn. Ophiuchus was never one of the twelve slices, and your sign has not changed.
Did my zodiac sign change because the stars moved?
The stars did move, slowly, and your sign did not. The Earth wobbles on its axis over about 26,000 years, so the constellations have drifted roughly one sign westward since the zodiac was set. Western astrology anchors Aries to the spring equinox rather than to the stars, so it is unaffected. Vedic astrology tracks the actual constellations, which is why your Vedic sign is often the one before your Western sign. Both systems are internally consistent; they are just measuring different things.
What is the difference between a sun sign, a moon sign and a rising sign?
The sun sign is the one you already know: where the Sun was on your birthday. It is the core. The moon sign is where the Moon was, which changes every two or three days, and is read as your private, emotional side. The rising sign is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the exact minute and place you were born, and is read as how you come across on first meeting. The moon needs your birth date; the rising needs your birth time and city.
Which zodiac signs are compatible?
The traditional shorthand works by element. Signs that share an element understand each other without explanation. Fire and Air feed each other, and Earth and Water hold each other. The sign directly opposite yours, six signs away, is the classic mirror: the pairing that either works completely or not at all. None of this is a rule. Every sign on this page has a section listing its people.
What is the difference between the zodiac, a horoscope and a constellation?
The zodiac is the band of sky the Sun travels through in a year, divided into twelve signs. A horoscope was originally a map of the whole sky at one moment, usually a birth; today it also means the daily forecast. A constellation is the actual pattern of stars. Velvet Moon's three Astra collections are named for the three ways a sign can be shown: the Horoscope glyph, the Spirit figure, and the Constellation map.
Which zodiac symbol should I wear?
The glyph is the version everyone recognizes across a room, in two or three strokes. The figure, the ram or the twins or the water bearer, is the older picture the sign was named for, and reads as jewelry first. The constellation is the quietest of the three: the stars themselves, which only people who know will place. Most people know which one sounds like them within a few seconds of seeing all three side by side.
