Zodiac Gift Guide

The zodiac gift guide: what each sign actually wants

You know their birthday. That is more than most gift guides give you to work with. Here is how each sign opens a gift, which of the three symbols to choose for them, and what they will quietly return.

Whose birthday is next

Every sign's season, starting with the one we are in. Tap one to see what to get them.

Aries the glyph on the Astra Horoscope Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Aries

March 21 – April 19. The ram.

How they open it

Aries opens it before you have finished handing it over. The reaction is immediate and honest, and it is on their face before it is in their words. If they love it, they are wearing it out of the room. If they do not, you will know, and they will still be glad you tried, which is more than most signs can say.

Which symbol to choose

The glyph. Aries wants the sign read across a room, not decoded up close. Two strokes for the ram's horns is the most direct version there is, which is the point.

What to skip

Anything that needs assembling, waiting for, or explaining. Aries does not want a gift with a manual.

Taurus the figure on the Astra Spirit Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Taurus

April 20 – May 20. The bull.

How they open it

Taurus opens it slowly and keeps the paper. They will turn it over, weigh it, run a thumb along the edge. The verdict takes a moment and then it is permanent: a Taurus who likes something will wear it for fifteen years and be surprised you noticed. Quality registers with them before design does.

Which symbol to choose

The figure. Taurus likes something to touch, and the bull cut in relief is the most physical of the three: a shape under the thumb, not just a mark on a surface.

What to skip

Anything disposable, trendy, or plated over brass. Taurus can tell, and they will be polite about it, which is worse.

Gemini the figure on the Astra Spirit Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Gemini

May 21 – June 20. The twins.

How they open it

Gemini opens it while telling you a story about something else, then loops back to it three times over the evening with new questions. They want to know where it came from and why you chose it, and the story is half the gift. They are harder to surprise than they look and easy to delight.

Which symbol to choose

The figure. Two figures, in this case. The twins are the only sign that is a pair, and Gemini likes a symbol that admits there is more than one of them.

What to skip

Anything that pins them down to one version of themselves. And anything you have seen someone else give them.

Cancer the glyph on the Astra Horoscope Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Cancer

June 21 – July 22. The crab.

How they open it

Cancer opens it carefully and goes a little quiet, which is the good sign. They are checking whether you remembered something, and if you did, they will remember that you did for the rest of their life. Cancer keeps gifts. The box goes in a drawer with the card still inside it.

Which symbol to choose

The glyph. Two curled claws holding on: the most tender of the twelve symbols, and Cancer will know exactly what it means. Small, close, and worn every day.

What to skip

Anything loud, generic, or last-minute. Cancer forgives the last-minute part, but they can tell, and they will wonder.

Leo the glyph on the Astra Horoscope Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Leo

July 23 – August 22. The lion.

How they open it

Leo opens it in front of everyone, and the opening is a performance you should let them have. They want to love it visibly and they want you to see them love it. Get it right and it becomes a story they tell about you. Leo remembers who gave what, forever, and it is a long list.

Which symbol to choose

The glyph. Leo wants the sign recognized, and the lion's tail with its extra flourish is the version everyone knows. The one piece of jewelry that gets asked about.

What to skip

Anything subtle enough to miss, or anything that was clearly the second option.

Virgo the stars on the Astra Constellation Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Virgo

August 23 – September 22. The maiden.

How they open it

Virgo opens it neatly and says the right thing, and you will not know for a week whether it landed. Watch whether they wear it. Virgo does not perform gratitude; they show it by using the thing correctly and telling you, later, exactly why it was a good choice, with details.

Which symbol to choose

The stars. Virgo prefers the version that is actually true: the constellation, mapped, with Spica where Spica is. A symbol that stands in for the sign is an approximation, and Virgo notices approximations.

What to skip

Anything that needs fixing, anything with a typo, and anything you bought without checking the size.

Libra the glyph on the Astra Horoscope Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Libra

September 23 – October 22. The scales.

How they open it

Libra opens it beautifully. The paper, the pause, the delight, all in proportion. They are genuinely pleased and they are also, a little, assessing whether it is pretty, and both are real. Libra is the easiest sign to buy for and the hardest to impress: they see a lot, and they have taste.

Which symbol to choose

The glyph. The beam of the scales is the most symmetrical mark in the zodiac, and Libra will feel that before they can say why. Balanced on a disc, balanced on a chain.

What to skip

Anything ugly. That sounds unkind; it is just true. Libra would rather have nothing than something they have to pretend about.

Scorpio the stars on the Astra Constellation Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Scorpio

October 23 – November 21. The scorpion.

How they open it

Scorpio opens it without giving anything away, and then looks at you, not the gift. They are reading what it says about how well you know them. If you got it right, you will see it for half a second before the face closes again. Scorpio does not gush. Scorpio keeps things, and wears them, and never says.

Which symbol to choose

The stars. The constellation is the private version: only people who know will place it, and Scorpio would rather be understood by a few than recognized by everyone.

What to skip

Anything you chose because it was easy. Anything with a logo. Anything that assumes they are the version of themselves they show at work.

Sagittarius the glyph on the Astra Horoscope Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Sagittarius

November 22 – December 21. The archer.

How they open it

Sagittarius opens it enthusiastically, possibly while packing. They love a gift, they say so, and then they take it somewhere. If you want to see it again, give them something that travels. They are not sentimental about objects; they are sentimental about the person, and they will tell you.

Which symbol to choose

The glyph. An arrow, pointed away. It is the most direct symbol in the set and Sagittarius likes direct: a mark that says where they are going, small enough to go with them.

What to skip

Anything fragile, heavy, or that has to stay home. Anything that comes with an expectation attached.

Capricorn the figure on the Astra Spirit Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Capricorn

December 22 – January 19. The sea-goat.

How they open it

Capricorn opens it with restraint and thanks you properly, and you will assume it went fine. Then, months later, you notice they are wearing it every day. Capricorn values things that last and people who mean it. The reaction is small and the loyalty is enormous.

Which symbol to choose

The figure. The sea-goat, a creature built for the climb and the deep at once. Capricorn appreciates a symbol with a strange, old story behind it, and this one is among the oldest there is.

What to skip

Anything flashy, anything that will look dated in a year, and anything that seems expensive rather than good.

Aquarius the stars on the Astra Constellation Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Aquarius

January 20 – February 18. The water bearer.

How they open it

Aquarius opens it curiously, like a small puzzle, and may say something odd about it, which is affection. They like a gift with an idea in it. They dislike being predicted, so the obvious thing, even if they would like it, lands worse than the thing you had to think about.

Which symbol to choose

The stars. Aquarius is an air sign with water in its name and a constellation almost nobody can find. They will like being the one who knows where it is. The star map is the least obvious of the three, which suits them.

What to skip

Anything everyone has. Anything you bought because it was “so them”; they will hear the quotation marks.

Pisces the figure on the Astra Spirit Bracelet disc

Gifts for a Pisces

February 19 – March 20. The fishes.

How they open it

Pisces opens it and gets emotional, and means it. They are moved by the fact of being thought of before the gift itself has registered. They will keep the card. They may cry, and it is fine. Pisces gives generously and receives generously, and you cannot really get this wrong if you meant it.

Which symbol to choose

The figure. Two fish tied by a cord, swimming in opposite directions: the only symbol in the zodiac about staying connected while being pulled apart, which is the thing Pisces most wants to be told.

What to skip

Anything cold, practical, or that comes with a joke about how they are always late. They know.

    Necklace, bracelet or ring?

The sign is the easy part. The piece depends on what you know about them, and how sure you are.

    The necklace

    The necklace$64

The safe choice. No size to know, it sits at the collarbone, and it is the one they will wear with everything. If you know nothing except their birthday, this is it.

    The bracelet

    The bracelet$54

For someone who already wears something on that wrist, a watch or a stack. The disc is set into the chain so it lies flat and does not fight with them. One size, no guessing.

    The ring

    The ring$46

Only if you know the size. Rings come in US 5 to 12. Borrow one of theirs and measure the inside, or ask someone who would know. If you cannot, choose the necklace; a ring that does not fit is a gift that gets exchanged.

    Before you order

What is a good zodiac gift?

One that shows you know which sign they are, and then something about them beyond that. A zodiac necklace, bracelet or ring is personal in a way most jewelry is not: there are only twelve, and you picked theirs. Choose the symbol that matches how they carry themselves. The glyph for people who like to be recognized, the figure for people who like a story, the constellation for people who would rather be understood by a few.

Do I need to know their birth time to buy zodiac jewelry?

No. The sun sign is set by the date alone, and that is the sign printed on the piece. Birth time only matters for the moon and rising signs, which are a different gift for a different day.

What if their birthday is on a cusp?

Then they are one sign or the other, depending on the year, and they almost certainly already know which one they call themselves. Go with the one they use. If you genuinely cannot find out, the birthday finder on our zodiac guide shows both, and the buy-two-get-one offer means you can give both without it costing more than a pair.

What ring size should I order?

The rings come in US 5 to 12. The reliable way to find out is to borrow a ring they wear on the finger you have in mind and measure the inside diameter: about 15.7 mm is a US 5, 16.5 mm is a US 6, 17.3 mm is a US 7. If you cannot get hold of one, buy the necklace or the bracelet instead. Neither needs a size.

Can I mix signs and pieces in the buy two, get one free offer?

Yes. Any three pieces across any signs, collections and finishes. The lowest-priced piece is the free one. Most people use it for exactly this: one for the person they are buying for, one for themselves, and one for whoever is next.

    Is the gold real?

The pieces are solid stainless steel with a bonded PVD finish in gold or silver. PVD is a bonding process rather than a plating, so the color is part of the surface instead of a layer over it. There is no brass core, nothing to flake, and nothing that turns skin green. They are made to be showered in and slept in.

What if they don't like it?

Every order ships free and comes with sixty days to change your mind, so they can wear it first. If it is the wrong sign, the wrong size, or just not them, see the shipping, returns and exchanges page for how to swap it.

Twelve signs. Three ways to draw each one.

The glyph everyone recognizes, the figure the sign was named for, and the stars themselves. Rings, bracelets and necklaces, in gold or silver, for every sign.
